The North Coast, known locally as Sahel, is the Mediterranean stretch west of Alexandria towards Marsa Matruh. It is primarily where Egyptians go in summer, a long ribbon of private resort compounds along genuinely beautiful white sand and clear turquoise water that surprises visitors expecting the Red Sea. Outside the summer months much of it closes down.
